On Saturday, the General Authority for Statistics (GASTAT) of Saudi Arabia disclosed the breakdown of official numbers for this year’s Hajj season, revealing that more than 1.83 million pilgrims undertook the procession.
Out of a total of 1,833,164 pilgrims, 1,611,310 came from outside the Kingdom, while 221,854 were citizens or residents of Saudi Arabia making the journey.
“The number of male pilgrims this year reached 958,137, while female pilgrims totaled 875,027,” GASTAT said.
Of the total number of foreign pilgrims, 22.3% were from Arab nations, 63.3% were from non-Arab Asian countries, 11.3% were from non-Arab African countries, and 3.2% were from other regions, including Europe, America, Australia, and other countries.
Approximately 1,546,345 foreign pilgrims came via air, 60,251 via land border crossings, and 4,714 via sea.
One of Islam’s five pillars, the Hajj, requires all Muslims who are physically able to make the journey to Mecca in Saudi Arabia once a year.
