OpenAI’s main AI productivity tool ChatGPT went unavailable for almost four hours on Tuesday, including online and mobile apps. After a short recovery, it’s offline again.
There have been a few small outages in ChatGPT’s picture and text generation capabilities, but this was the first major disruption in quite some time.
At around 2:30 ET this morning, reports began to surface on the downtime tracking website DownDetector regarding problems with the web, mobile app, and desktop software.
OpenAI said it found the outage origin around 04:00 ET and was fixing it to restore services. At 05:00 ET, it was “working on a fix for this issue.” Services returned at 07:45 ET and disappeared at 10:30 ET.
Users switched to Claude 3 and MetaAI, two alternatives to ChatGPT, while it was offline.
